George Orwell — 'Some ideas are so stupid that only intellectuals believe them."
The following memorializes Orwell's 2018 intellectuals:
------Performances of THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES CANCELLED, because NOT ALL WOMEN HAVE VAGINAS
“Mount Holyoke College, an all-women’s school in Massachusetts, has scrapped plans to host a performance of
“The Vagina Monologues” because it is not inclusive enough. Mount Holyoke student Erin Murphy explained on behalf of the student-run theater board in an email to students on Wednesday that the play is problematic because it is not inclusive of trans women, Campus Reform reported.
“At its core, the show offers an extremely narrow perspective on what it means to be a woman,” Murphy explained, according to Campus Reform.“Gender is a wide and varied experience,” Murphy continued, “one that cannot simply be reduced to biological or anatomical distinctions, and many of us who have participated in the show have grown increasingly uncomfortable presenting material that is inherently reductionist and exclusive.”
Murphy did not immediately return a request for comment from The Huffington Post.….. The Vagina Monologues was written in 1996 by Eve Ensler, who founded the V-Day campaign. Ensler’s play has been translated into 48 languages and performed in 140 countries, according to the V-Day campaign.”
V-DAY is day set aside to memorialize and then eradicate violence against women; Ms. Ensler has used performances of her play to combat violence against women.
“Eastern Michigan University (EMU) has reportedly halted production of Eve Ensler’s 1994 play because of its lack of trans-sensitivity, and overall lack of diversity and inclusion.
The university’s announcement came in the form of an email from EMU…. “the play centers on cisgender women, that the play's version of feminism excludes some women, including trans women, and that overall, "The Vagina Monologues" lacks diversity and inclusion.”Due to copyright laws, the WRC said that modifying the script is not an option.
"We feel that making this decision is in line with the WRC mission of recognizing and celebrating the diverse representations of women on campus along with the overall mission of the Department of Diversity and Community Involvement,in which the WRC is housed, of supporting and empowering minoritized students and challenging systems and structures that perpetuate inequities,” the email from the WRC read. “We truly believe that it is important to center our minoritized students and this decision is in line with this mission driven value."
…WRC workshop titled “Not all women have vaginas,” According to the WRC, students had concerns regarding the relevance and effectiveness of the once-groundbreaking “Vagina Monologues,” which was written by feminist activist Eve Ensler as an episodic play, featuring first-person narratives where women talk about their vaginas. It had long been considered representative of feminist liberation. Those concerns apparently “created a need to ask the question: Do we still need 'The Vagina Monologues?' And, are 'The Vagina Monologues' still relevant to next generation feminists?" the WRC email went on to say.”
WHOEVER THOUGHT WOMEN WITH VAGINAS WOULD BAN EVE ENSLER's PLAY ON BEHALF OF WOMEN WITHOUT VAGINAS? Orwell would have knowingly despaired.
--------BANNED FROM THE RADIO-BABY , IT’S COLD OUTSIDE; the duet was written by Frank Loesser in 1944. He sang it with his wife at Hollywood parties. The song was heard by a movie executive and was placed in the film, NEPTUNE'S DAUGHTER; it won an OSCAR for BEST SONG. It has been covered by Dean Martin, Dolly Parton, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Sir Tom Jones, Michael Buble,Dean Martin, Pearl Bailey, June Carter, Dinah Shore,Louis Armstrong,Sammy Davis Junior,Anne-Margret, Bette Midler, Robert Palmer, Barry Manilow, James Caan,Rod Stewart, Lou Rawls, Vanessa Williams, CeeLo Greene, Amy Grant,James Taylor, Kelly Clarkson, Garth Brooks, Sheryl Crow, Lady Gaga, and Natalie Cole.
The Lyrics are as follows:
“I really can't stay (Baby it's cold outside)
This evening has been (Been hoping that you'd dropped in)
So very nice (I'll hold your hands they're just like ice)
My mother will start to worry (Beautiful what's your hurry?)
My father will be pacing the floor (Listen to the fireplace roar)
So really I'd better scurry (Beautiful please don't hurry)
Well maybe just a half a drink more (I'll put some records on while I pour)
……So nice and warm (Look out the window at that storm)
My sister will be suspicious (Gosh your lips look delicious!)
My brother will be there at the door (Waves upon a tropical shore)
My maiden aunt's mind is vicious (Gosh your lips are delicious!)…”
Alas for this OSCAR winning song, introduced to the world by Latino aka Latinx heartthrob Ricardo Montalban, in 1949, it is 2018; a time mired in millennial madness.“A Cleveland radio station banned Baby Its Cold Outside, the holiday classic from its airwaves …. Deeming its lyrics inappropriate in the #MeToo era. "…... CBC.”
-----Teacher Fired for ?????
“Social studies teacher Diane Tirado, 52, was fired from West Gate K-8 School in Port St. Lucie in south Florida after she had been working there for just two months. Apparently, the school employs a “no zero” policy that Tirado is said to have violated after a group of students failed to hand in one of their first major assignments of the school year. This resulted in Tirado’s forced departure.…. She said that during this meeting the principal informed her of the alleged “no zero” policy: “I was not allowed to give anything lower than a 50.”….NY POST.”
------SAVING THE CHILDREN FROM SCARFACE
“Films that have facially-scarred villains will no longer be able to receive funding from the British Film Institute (BFI). This is part of a campaign to remove the stigma around disfigurement.
Ben Roberts, the BFI’s deputy CEO, announced the news yesterday by stating that “This campaign speaks directly to the criteria in the BFI diversity standards, which call for meaningful representations on screen. We fully support Changing Faces’s #IAmNotYourVillain campaign, and urge the rest of the film industry to do the same,” he went on to add that “film is a catalyst for change and that is why we are committing to not having negative representations depicted through scars or facial difference in the films we fund,” says Ben Roberts, the BFI’s deputy CEO.”…DAILY TELEGRAPHUK.”
----BANNING LATINO AND LATINA-
In the satiric novel, GULLIVER’S TRAVEL GULLIVER finds that the Lilliputians are “… a people who put great emphasis on trivial matters. For example, which end of an egg a person cracks becomes the basis of a deep political rift within that nation.”
In 2018, Americans can pride themselves on becoming Lilliputians.
“Latinx is a gender-neutral term used in lieu of Latino or Latina (referencing Latin American cultural or racial identity). The plural is Latinxs.”
Spearheaded by Princeton University, intellectuals are banning the terms Latino and Latina for Latinx, a more inclusive term, in that the x represents transgenders.
Latinx, by definition is Lilliputian. Latinx would be a joke, if it wasn’t for the fact it is occupying the time and efforts of America's best Latino and Latina minds.
Therefore, this Blogger will humbly suggest that the best and brightest Latino/Latina minds start worrying about this- “the World Bank forecasts that by 2050, we'll need 50% more food to feed the world's population.
So here's the problem. Between now and 2050, they expect the world's population to grow from seven billion to nine billion. Even given our demographic outlook, which shows most developed countries will have trouble just maintaining their populations, we're still looking at about 10 billion people before the end of the century. But the real problem is that due to worsening climate conditions, crop yields will be cut by 25% during that same time frame…..BUSINESS INSIDER.”
------THE 2018 FILM, MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS
In 1971, the British historical drama MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS was released, about the clash between Mary Stuart and Elizabeth Tudor; MARY was the beautiful one of the pair. ELIZABETH was quirky in her beauty, possessing a towering intelligence and ruthlessness.
The classical conceit is to cast a luminous actress as the vainglorious beauty MARY, and a wonderful actress, with great acting chops, as the cunning ELIZABETH. But in 2018, we live in a post reality world, a world swamped by the good intentions of the damned and stupid.
In the 2018 version of MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS, the better actress but more pedestrian beauty is cast as the vamp MARY, and the beautiful actress without the acting chops is cast as ELIZABETH.
Readers save yourselves the time and money of watching the 2018 version, and rent the 1971 version, with Vanessa Redgrave as MARY and Glenda Jackson as ELIZABETH. (It has a treat, Patrick McGoohan as the bastard James Stewart, Earl of Moray).
On a philosophical, Orwellian plane, there is the problem of cultural appropriation in the 2018 film.
The film is set in 16th Century Scotland and England, yet the film has a number of black actors playing key roles in Mary’s entourage, so many it feels like a modern network or cable episode. The 2018 film casts an Asian actress as BESS OF HARDWICK (picture below).
That was a multicultural offense to this Blogger, for he is a big fan of the real life BESS OF HARDWICK. In Medieval Times, she lived to be 80, married four times, and wound up filthy rich and independent, in a man’s world.
This Blogger understands that the Asian actress who plays BESS was born in Britain; but casting her in that role is a Stalinist re-write of History. There were no Asian Brits flitting around England in the 1560s, keeping Mary, Queen of Scots locked up for Elizabeth I. To portray that there were Asian Brits doing Royal things in the Elizathean Age, is cultural appropriation of the vilest form.
Which brings us here:
“QUESTION-Is the inclusion of black actors in the movie "Mary Queen of Scots" based on reality or is it historical revision?
ANSWER-While there were a few black people in England at that time, they were mostly poor and living in London. The likelihood that any significant character in the story of Mary Stuart was black is minimal. There is an increasing tendency to have black actors playing historical characters who almost certainly were not black: for some reason having a black actor play a historically white character is acceptable, while having a white actor play a historically black character is not.
The following is from the former Outreach and Scholarly Communications Librarian at University of Notre Dame (2008-2017)
"Hollywood is making an effort to include more POC to make up for years of being almost exclusively white. While there may have been some Africans (more likely Moors) it’s really an effort to give screen time/exposure to the many talented actors of color. That’s wonderful because the more POC are seen on screen the more likely 1) those actors will land additional, larger roles and 2) we’ll start to think it’s strange to see an all white cast.”
God forbid Readers would think this Blogger is behind the times in this Orwellian multicultural miasma; therefore he has suggestions, mighty suggestions.
This Blogger is going to start GOFUNDME campaigns to develop films starring:
a) A biography of James Baldwin, starring Tilda Swinton(black face optional) as Baldwin.
b) A biography of Nelson Mandela starring Sean Hayes as Mandela.
c) A biography of Frederick Douglass starring Neil Patrick Harris as Douglass.
d) A biography of Harriet Tubman starring Lucy Liu as Tubman.
e) A biography of Mao Zedong starring RuPaul as Mao.
That slate of films would make Orwell’s intellectuals very perky.
