In 1954 there was the film, THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY about danger in the air; that was followed by the 1964 film, FATE IS THE HUNTER about a fatal airplane crash and the followup investigation; followed by the 1970 film, AIRPORT, about a bomber on a plane, starring every living star in Hollywood at the time; followed by the sequels, AIRPORT 75, AIRPORT 77, AIRPORT 79- THE CONCORDE.
All that melodramatic danger in the air was laughed to death by the films AIRPLANE in 1980, followed by AIRPLANE II in 1982.
Everything in air flight had been covered, both the tragedy and the comedy of air travel, until Air France Flight 447. Flight 447 was the Air France Airbus Flight from Brazil to France, which,in 2009, crashed in the South Atlantic , killing all on board,228 passengers.
Airbuses fly by wire, which means they fly by computers rather than the old mechanical ways. Very up to date, except when something goes awry, then it seems it is very difficult to set right.
In the wee hours of June 1, Captain Marc Dubois took a rest break from the Cockpit, leaving his two co-pilots - David Robert, 37, and Pierre-Cedric Bonin, 32 - in charge.
The Airbus hit a thunderstorm, a severe thunderstorm and the fly by wire modern plane got into trouble, " as their Airbus A330 rolled from side to side in the storm's turbulence, Bonin and Robert-who respectively had 2,900 and 6,600 flying hours between them-were unable to bring the it under control"
The two co pilots called out for help for Captain Dubois. Captain Dubois did not return to his cabin ASAP.
It seems he was .........shall we say ....................busy.
Captain Dubois, who looked amazingly like actor Rory Calhoun, was indisposed. It seems he was travelling with his friend Veronique Gaignard, and they seemingly were off discussing airplanes, in the French way, in a remote part of the plane.
Captain Marc Dubois.

"Marc Dubois, captain of the Air France jet which crashed in the Atlantic in 2009, may have been with a woman when the plane ran into trouble. Two sources say he was travelling socially with off-duty Air France flight attendant Veronique Gaignard"
Bonin was in control for most of the descent ..the emergency began nine minutes after Captain Dubois had left the cockpit...."
Veronique Gaignard
What would the Keepers of Kismet say to us about the crash of Flight 447?
They would say in unison, that it was a great tragedy.......yet
They would also say that the Destiny of Flight 447 was something out of French farce, something out of TARTUFFE by Moliere; Captain Dubois could not get his pants back on in time.
When Calhoun's wife sued him for divorce, "...she named Betty Grable as one of 79 women he had adulterous relationships with. Calhoun replied to her charge, "Heck, she didn't even include half of them."
Alas it seems Captain Dubois had one woman too many, "one toke over the line."
